It has become that time again.
It's vacation time, but not just any ordinary vacation time.
This is GenCon. This is masses of gamers, male and female alike (blessings to White Wolf for starting the increase in the female population), all descending upon Milwaukee for four days of gaming until we can't game no more.
It is the last time I will likely be in Milwaukee as far as I can see, for after this year, GenCon leaves the state of Wisconsin, where it has resided since it started, for the fair city (and more convention-friendly, I've been told) of Indianapolis, Indiana.
And when I got home today, after a brief journey out to weigh-in at WW, the most difficult task began.
It is not the packing of the suitcase. It is not even the decisions on what goes and what stays; what gamebooks are needed; what dice are given the honor of sliding into the backpack. Not even whether or not to take the black notebook with the gold and silver gel pens that got such comments two years ago.
It's in the t-shirt selection.
You must understand. I have a rather large t-shirt collection. It fills one drawer entirely in my dresser, and then the overflow goes into another drawer. Some months back (maybe even last year), I weeded out a bunch of them, ones I never wore anymore, ones too faded or old or small, and put them into a trash bag.
They haven't made it out of the bedroom yet. They will, eventually. They've been cut, and that means I'm done with them.
I have no need for what they say anymore. I have new (or not-so-new) t-shirts to wear.
So the question becomes...what do I want to say?
My Sluggy shirts are a given. It's just a choice of which ones. Do I go with the limited-edition Gwynn one they did for DragonCon? It's not iron-on, and looks better than the Quatrix shirt (the double-sided one). Or do I pull out the Sluggy Mummy Christmas (again, double-sided), since I haven't worn that one in a while? The denim long-sleeved shirt with Bun-Bun over the pocket? Sure, that can go over a shirt, in case it's cold due to the air conditioning in the Midwest Express Center (I miss MECCA!).
But I don't want a week full of Sluggy. So what else? What to pick?
I could pick the Thank you for Calling Technical Support shirt; that was a big hit at MWNY. Only problem being my long hair covered the back of the shirt. Plus, it is black. But I think it will go as well.
What next?
I've worn my Romance Readers Anonymous t-shirt that Anne got done for us RRA-L'ers some time ago. It only got one comment; that from an artist at whose booth I had stopped to browse. The t-shirt says: "Never Apologize for your Reading Tastes," and has the listserv address beneath it.
Oh, and that brings me to another possibility. My HIGHLA-L t-shirt. Back when I was on the list, and watching the show, someone did a t-shirt with the Watcher's symbol on it, with the words, "No one knew we were on the 'Net...until now," and with the listserv's address after it as well.
That's a good shirt too. How many so far? Urk. It's only four days, plus one on each end for traveling.
And I haven't even gotten to the Star Wars shirts yet! Jediwear, Roguewear, Palacewear - my Luke/Han/Leia shirts (respectively). Those are so comfortable, too...
Then there's my Tim Bradstreet shirts. My Red Sky Diaries shirt that he signed, lo those many GenCons ago. And then there's the "illegal" shirt - the white shirt with the sketch of Severen on it, with the wonderful quote, and the spatters of blood. That always causes comment...but it's getting threadbare now, and I want to make it last as long as it can.
And then there's the other illegal shirt. Well, not illegal, but just wrong. My Bugtown shirt, that says it's coming soon from Phage Press. And then there's the other Bugtown shirt, the one Simone gave me many GenCons ago...
Speaking of Simone will remind me of all the Amber t-shirts I have, too. Can't exclude those. I do have one of the few long-sleeved green Corwin shirts, gotta have the long-sleeved just in case of the cold...
Oh, and there's my Blue Man Group shirt, from Las Vegas earlier this year. It's long-sleeved, so have to think about adding that in.
How many is that? For how many days? Frell...I need another suitcase.

That's most excellent. I may have to do my t-shirt post now ...
