Monday Mission 3.17

1. Postmodernism (a popular philosophy of the current day) indicates that there are as many "truths" as there are people; nothing is absolute (however, by its very nature, even the word 'Postmodernism" resists definition). For yourself, what truths are absolute? Are there any absolute truths in the Universe?

I took extra days to think about this one, and I still have no idea what to reply. So I'm skipping this one.

2. Do you believe that you are still "teachable?"

Yes. Very much yes.

3. To do something well, in most situations, requires study and practice. What's the most recent thing that you have done well as a result of study and practice.

I wish I could say my writing, but I have been so lagging on that lately. So I'm going to have to say working with computers in general. Software, hardware, all things. I've worked with CSS, I've used Photoshop, I've installed OSX.

4. If you had the time/money, what do you want to lean how to do more than anything?

Fly a plane.

5. Those around us may often try to intervene, but ultimately each individual is responsible for the choices they make in life. Tell me about a recent situation where you had a decision to make, and those around you tried to influence or direct you. Were they successful? Was that "help" welcomed?

Well, we bought a car a few weeks ago! But that wasn't really my decision. It was a dual-decision, but Lou was primary on it. I can't think of another one right now. Geez, I'm really sucking at this MM this week.

6. Things are much easier to accept when they are given by invitation rather than being forced upon us. When was the last time you rejected something because it was forced on you? How did it happen? Did you hold a grudge about it? Was it ever resolved?

Can't think of a time. Not that it hasn't happened, because I know it has. But nothing is coming to mind.

And yes, I hold grudges. For quite a long time, actually.

7. Are you the sort of person who questions everything, or are you able to accept things without someone providing you tangible proof?

Depends on the person and the situation. Some people I will accept things freely, others cause me to question. But in general, I'm more of a questioner than not.

Not so missing after all

Well, the laptop fan decided to start working again. Not long after I posted the "I'll be gone" message, actually. That evening, I heard it start up, and it hasn't "died" since.

I think it was because I brought a TiBook home and leaned Tallis (the laptop) up against it, and Tallis knew I was serious. Either that, or burning a CD and tilting the laptop up on its side to keep it going while it was burning fixed it somehow. I don't know.

So I'm back in business. At least for now.

Thursday Thumbs

1. To what organization do you feel the deepest loyalty? What ties you most to that group?

My family is so large it might be considered an organization! But other than that, I don't really belong to any formal organizations, so I don't really have a response for this.

2. Would you euthanize your healthy, happy pet for $50k? How about $1 million?

Damn, tough question! No, I wouldn't. Not for the money. Athena and Artemis give me more than money can buy.

3. Of all the US presidents during your lifetime, which one is/was your favorite?

Bill Clinton (watching one of my older brothers eyes roll at that). Though I have a soft spot for Jimmy Carter because my uncle worked for him.

Song Friday Five

1. Name one song you hate to admit you like.

I'm not really afraid to admit I like any song. Even Sk8r Boi has its moments.

2. Name two songs that always make you cry.

The Horsetamer's Daughter filk , by Leslie Fish. And there's another filk I can't find anymore, about a ship in space where the crew dies to bring refugees to safety, all but one member who gets beaned on the head by another crewmember when he suggests drawing straws for the last, undamaged suit/helmet or something. The story is told from his POV, and it always makes me cry. I'm mentioning it here hoping someone will know the filk in question and tell me where I can find it!

3. Name three songs that turn you on.

Closer, by Nine Inch Nails. I can't think of any others.

4. Name four songs that always make you feel good.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight, by The Tokens
Rio, by Duran Duran.
Ukelele de Chocobo, by Nobuo Uematsu (from the FFIX soundtrack).
Star Wars closing/ending theme music, by John Williams.

5. Name five songs you couldn't ever do without.

Blasphemous Rumors, by Depeche Mode.
Ukelele de Chocobo, by Nobuo Uematsu.
Make Room for Me, by Susie Burke.
To Zanarkand, by Nobuo Uematsu (from the FFX soundtrack).
The Shopping Cart of Love: The Play, by Christine Lavin.

Weekly Wrap-Up #53

1. When is your birthday?

December 5th!

2. How accurate is your zodiac sign?

Sagittarius - I am quite Sagittarian, alas. Ooh, here's a description from a website:

Now let's translate this to Sagittarius, a Fire sign. Sagittarians are optimistic, exuberant, outgoing, lively, enthusiastic, good humoured, generous and jovial. They are curious, creative, idealistic, fun-loving, positive, friendly and hospitable. Their defects are Jupiterian: carelessness, clumsiness, extravagance, irresponsibility, impulsiveness, impatience, over-optimism, exaggeration, sloppiness and untidiness. They are gamblers in the broadest sense, fortunately the Great Benefic smiles on their escapades.
Though I'll disagree on the over-optimism for me. I'm much more of a pessimist. Oh yes, we also can be blunt and tactless and insensitive. Tis also me.

3. What do you typically do to celebrate your birthday?

Nothing, really. Lou will take me out to dinner sometimes. He gives me cards and presents. We don't make it a big deal.

4. Do you like to receive presents? Why or why not?

Of course! Who doesn't like to get presents! Because I love opening gifts and surprises. I also love getting what I've asked for.

5. Describe the best birthday and/or present you ever had.

Has to be the iPod Lou gave me last year. I've probably had better ones, but I have no memory for that sort of thing.

Opera Issues

Opera has stopped fully sending the blog info when I post using it. It stops at telling me it's rebuilding the entry, and goes no further.

So no pings get out, no back to the entry page. And this also is true if I use the bookmarklet.

IE seems to be working fine, though. But it has no tabs!

Off to download the latest Mozilla, and see how that works.

Alias Season Finale

I can't handle this sort of thing. Squeeing over X-Men 2 at the beginning of the weekend, living and enjoying the high and starting to fall into another fandom...

And then to have it all come to a screeching halt, watching the last two episodes of Alias this season.

Is J.J. Abrams that much of a masochist? Yes, yes he is.

I had no one online to discuss the episodes of Alias with as they happened. So I took notes. I found myself yelling at the TV screen during the first hour, and decided that I'd write down the timestamps and my reactions to the second hour.

It rambles. It is fangirly screaming. But it was me for two hours last night, ending with me drained and spent, and too worked up to get to sleep right away.

Damn. What the FRELL is he trying to do to us??

Other than the above and below....I. Have. No. Words.

Mighty Winds, blow my foe!

Storm
You are Storm!

You are very strong and very protective of those
you love. You are in tune with nature and are
very concerned with justice and humanity.
Unfortunately, certain apprehensions and fears
are very hard for you to overcome, and can
often inhibit you when most need to be strong.

Which X-Men character are you most like?
brought to you by Quizilla

I've been very busy this week. Will try to update more later.

Oh! Courtesy of Anne.

Please, let it be true...

RUMOR only, alas

(ROTK) is indeed, far and way better than both Fellowship and Two Towers. It was a 4 hour, 20 minute cut of the film. Feeling that he has proven audiences will gladly sit for 3 hours of quality cinema, Peter Jackson will try to leave the film's 1/6 of a day total time as is.

Monday Mission 3.18

1. Are there any confrontations you have been avoiding that you know you will eventually have to deal with? What's that all about?

Not particularly now, no. There was the time when I was going to run into my sister-in-law after she'd told my brother-in-law that she didn't want to be married to him anymore. I wasn't sure how I was going to react. It turned out that I was politely friendly, but we didn't see each other much (thankfully!), and I won't have to see her again, if I can help it!

2. When was the last time you surprised yourself by being more brave than you ever thought you could be?

I can't really recall a time. Not recently, anyway. I'm not called on to be brave often.

3. You know that sickly feeling you get when are speeding and out of the corner of your eye you realize you just passed a hidden police car? It is that "deer-caught-in-the-headlights" feeling, where you are so busted there is no way out. When was the last time you were in a situation like that?

Heh. At work, I was bitching to my boss about a co-worker, and he sort of walked in on it. I had finished, but he might have heard. She helped me out of the situation by throwing it wide open (which freaked me out, honestly), but it was probably for the best.

4. One of the things I've had to do recently, is clean out my attic. I have an amazing amount of things I've collected over the years, and I am almost embarrassed that I still have so much of it. I realized that I may as well sell it, since it does me no good in the attic, and when I die, my family will probably sell it for a dollar a pound at a garage sale anyway. May as well enjoy the money now. Do you have any things stored away that you just can't get rid of but will probably of no sentimental value to anyone once you are gone? Why do we hang on to that stuff? Do you think you could sell or auction it off?

Hells yes. I'm sentimental. But most of my stuff is junk. I have very little of value, except to me.

5. I've become the resident Handler at the house. Got bugs? Call me! Flies, ants, spiders, I'm your man. Vomit? Dog Poo? Toilet overflow? Yep, I get it all clean. Not much bothers me in that area, and I am glad really to be someone you can rely on. But the one thing that does make me squirm are injuries. Stitches, incisions, bloody puss-laden bandages, heavily scabbed areas, all that just about does me in. What are some of the things you have a strong stomach for, and what are some of the things that can turn your stomach?

I'm pretty good about most "gross" things. A lot depends on the mood I'm in, and the purpose. I don't squick easily. I once cleaned a co-worker's wound because it creeped her out, and she couldn't do it herself. It was neat - a little hole in her arm, covered in gauze. I wanted to look at it more.

6. I am at the point where I am going to have to make some tough decisions about the future of this blog. I think this sort of moment comes to all bloggers at some point. For me, I am not very good at managing my obsessions (read as: things I enjoy passionately). Eventually they get too much focus and something that once was good begins to impact my life in negative ways. Something's got to give. Have you ever been involved in an experience that started out as something good and enjoyable but eventually became destructive and bad for your health (mentally or physically)?

Yes. Back when I was a SysOp on RPGames, I burned out. Not really the same thing as destructive, but it became bad for my mental health, for me to continue. I finally quit.

I also obsess a bit about some fandoms. Harry Potter, starting last year at about this time, and now I'm in the middle of a full-fledged X-Men passion. Not destructive yet, but I've seen others get that way. I'm pretty good about avoiding that end of things.

I'm also a bit obsessive about being online. :)

7. Do you believe in evolution or creationism or something else?

Evolution. Too much of a scientist at heart.

Thursday Thumbs on Friday

1. What is one event in the future whose outcome you would like to know right now?

WHAT THE FRELL HAPPENED ON ALIAS! No, wait, WHAT THE FRELL HAPPENED ON FARSCAPE!!??

Ahem.

Other that the imaginary kind, I'd like to know if we ever manage to explore outside of our own local space. Even manned missions to Mars or Jupiter; I don't need to know if we go out of our solar system.

2. If you were exiled from your country, and had only limited financial resources, where would you try to rebuild your life?

Do I get a free trip to whatever country I'm going to?

Hmm...tough question. Hong Kong would be fun to try. But I'd be more likely to head to Great Britain and try to get started over there. The whole language barrier thing.

3. An eccentric millionaire hires you to spend $10 million to help society. What would you do with it?

Help fund free health clinics in as many places as I could manage.

Organized Friday Five

1. Would you consider yourself an organized person? Why or why not?

In certain areas, I'm very organized. Back when I worked on my desktop computer, everything had its place. It looked a mess, but I knew where everything was! My purse is also organized, and some of my work area at work is organized.

The rest is an utter and complete mess.

2. Do you keep some type of planner, organizer, calendar, etc. with you, and do you use it regularly?

I have my Palm IIIc, but I don't use it as often as I should.

3. Would you say that your desk is organized right now?

See above. :)

4. Do you alphabetize CDs, books, and DVDs, or does it not matter?

Yes, by artist/author last name, then by series in printed/published order, or release order for CDs. The DVDs, not so much. I do keep like CDs together - the Roughnecks series (now complete!), all the Kevin Smith DVDs that we have, the Star Wars DVDs, etc. Then I go by the kind of case. Some of them have a flip open side that gets caught on other cases if you try to push them together. So those are separate. Then there's the oddly-sized sets - Buffy, seasons 1 and 2 (no, we don't have 3 yet), Fellowship, Beauty and the Beast, etc.

I need to reorganize the books, though. They started out in order but now are SERIOUSLY out of whack. It will take a lot of time though, and I'd need to weed out the ones to not keep (like the romance novels).

5. What's the hardest thing you've ever had to organize?

My office at work, when I moved into a new one. It's still not organized!

Weekly Wrap-Up #54

1. How much hair did you have when you were born?

No clue. Probably a little bit.

2. Share a hair memory from childhood.

I had long hair, like I do now. It used to turn up in banana curls. But I never pulled it back, and it would fall forward into my food. My mom always threatened to tie it under my chin, and one time, she did it. It didn't stay, but it was quite amusing.

Now I can't imagine not pulling it back when I eat!

3. How do you style your hair now? How much time to do you spend on caring for your hair?

It's long, about mid-back, with bangs. I don't spend a lot of time on my hair, but I do care for it. I often braid it up or pull it back, or tuck in into my shirt, which always makes people think I got it cut.

4. Describe your worst hair day? What happened?

When I had my hair cut short, to match my friend Kris'. It was the 80s. She had this neat, short haircut, which feathered back from her head. I wanted that.

Do you remember my comment above about my curly hair? Yeah, it didn't feather. It went every which way it wanted to. It looked awful. I grew it out and vowed to never get it cut short again.

But I did have a tail then, behind my right ear. That part didn't get cut, and it got braided every day.

5. What's the best and worst thing about your hair? Why?

I have a high forehead, so I pretty much need to have bangs. But they don't want to go where I want them to go, so they look awful pretty quickly. I don't wash my hair every day, which means very quickly my bangs go wonky and won't behave. Alas and alack.

PaleoGeek

Gacked from someone on LiveJournal, and I couldn't resist...

1. When did you first connect ("go online"), and how?

Hmm...I guess that would be about 1985 or '86. On CompuServe, to find hints for playing Bard's Tale I or II. I got hooked then.

2. What was your first communications program?

Well, I originally went online on a Commodore 64. Some sort of terminal dial-up program. 300 baud. Whoo!

3. When did you first chat over the internet, and how?

There was a Bard's Tale chat with the designers of the game, on CIS. I remember being upset (and asking them!) that there weren't any female playable characters, and they said they'd fix that. They had had other complaints.

I also chatted regularly on Gamers. Ah, for the good old days of /sen uin message...

4. What chat type program(s) do you use now?

I use Fire at work, Trillian at home. I'm on AIM, YM, MSN, and ICQ.

5. Who was your first service provider?

CompuServe. Back in the day when everything was text, and we LIKED IT THAT WAY!

6. Did you ever use AOL?

Yes, but only for specific purposes.

7. Do you admit using AOL in public?

Yes, but only if I explain the details. :) My first encounter with AOL was when someone was doing a conference/chat. I think it was Renee O'Connor. I got a free account, went, and then left the service before the first bill.

I went back again when I had to buy AOL for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Did you know that you can't buy someone free time on AOL unless you're a member too? They have to bill your account's billing credit card. You can't just buy it as a gift. Feh. So I signed up with my AIM screen name, waited a month after charging it, and then cancelled. Whey they tried to get me to stay, I told them flat out why I had gotten the account. They didn't pressure me to stay.

8. Who is your current ISP?

Comcast, it appears. AT&T got bought out/merged, who in turn bought out the original MediaOne.

9. What was the first computer that you used to access the 'net?

See above, Commmore 64. I remember when I made MOTM (Member of the Month) and used the money saved from not being billed for the month (hourly charges!!) to buy a brand spankin' new 2400 baud modem (MAY have been a 1200, but I don't think it was). $300 or so. Ah, bliss.

10. What computer do you use to access the 'net today?

At work, I use a QuickSilver 933MHz PowerMac with 512mb of RAM and a SuperDrive. At home, I use my Toshiba 3005-S307, with WinXP Home (that's what it came with), the just-upgraded-to 512mb of memory, and digital internet, provided to me wirelessly by our AirPort Base Station.

11. What was your first 'net handle?

Dazzler.

12. Did you use any other handles for any length of time? If so, what were they?

Nothing else really. I was Dazzler pretty much until I left CIS finally, and then I became Glyneth. But people call me Dazz or Dazzler and I respond to it; if people call me Glyneth, I don't.

13. What 'net handle do you normally use now?

Glyneth for email addresses. I have another one for LJ. But I'm mostly just Julia.

Monday Mission 3.19

1. Who are your favorite cartoon characters?

Depends on the cartoon. Right now, GIR is a HUGE favorite, from Invader Zim. He's just so wacky. "To make room for the cupcake!"

Then there are the classic Warner Brothers - Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn.

Never much of a big Disney fan, though.

2. Have you yet reached the point where you feel like you are from a different generation than today's youth?

Oh, hell yes, alas. The music, the clothes. I feel so old.

3. What was the first Music Video that really impressed you? What made it so amazing?

I have no idea. We had Previews (some kind of pre-cable system, I think it may have been satellite of some kind) back before MTV, because we didn't have cable. Roger & Roger had a video show, and that's where I saw stuff like Mental as Anything ("Brain Brain") and Oingo Boingo ("Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me"), so I'm sure one of those scarred me for life, when it came to videos. Then again, I was a HUGE Duran Duran fan. I rented a videotape of all their early releases regularly.

I do admit to watching Thriller when it was released. That was really something for its time.

4. Name a song and an era that comes to mind when you hear the word "Retro."

Oh, the 50s and all their harmonizing girl and boy bands.

5. How has your life been affected by HIV or AIDS?

It's not been terribly impacted, for good or bad.

6. Yesterday in the USA, we celebrated "Mothers Day," a day where we honor the mothers in our lives. If you were on a "special day" nominating committee, who or what would you recommend that we create a day in honor of?

The Exploration of Space. Moon Day. Oh yeah.

7. Last week, we have several Tornadoes tore through many neighborhoods, destroying homes and devastating the lives of the residents. How would you feel if you lost every possession you owned? Or would it matter? How would you go on with your life?

I would feel devastated. But I've lost some things that were important to me before (kept in purses that were stolen), so I would be able to move on beyond it. It would be worse if someone close to me lost their life. Or if something happened to my cats.

Kristen's quiz

Took Kristen's quiz. Got a 40.

31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over it if that trust is ever broken.

I think that's true.

Da Matrix

No, not our car, but the movie. We're going to see it at 10:00 p.m. tonight.

Which means, alas, we will miss the lunar eclipse that's going on tonight. Ah well, maybe we'll catch some of it on the way to and from the movie.

And I'm off to The Black Road tomorrow late morning. Won't return until Sunday late afternoon. Ya'll be good whilst I'm gone, ya hear?

Writing Meme

Okay, so it's not like I don't have enough on my plate right now...

But I have been seeing the one word posts about my blogroll, and I've been participating in some of the microfiction (nanofiction?) communities on Livejournal, where you tell a story in 100 words, or 144 words, or some other small bite of words. They're also called "drabbles."

So. I was thinking of starting one up outside of LJ and fandom, for original fic writing. I'd be done on a theme, each week with a new theme or word or something to inspire.

Would anyone be interested in participating?

iTrip & Weekend Fun

So, my iTrip arrived on Friday. Too bad I was already on my way to The Black Road and couldn't use it, but I expect it will start getting more use now.

Unfortunately, it looks like it was designed for use with the original iPods, that didn't have covers for the FW port. So I'll either have to turn it to the side or force the cover to be open a bit more than I would like. *sighs* Also got a FW power adapter, though it's unnecessary in the Matrix, as it has the power converter. But we'll be taking the van to North Carolina, which doesn't have the converter and will be the place where we'll be likely to use an iPod for the longest period of time.

The Black Road was a lot of fun, even if I did see my husband in all the game slots he played in, and I did game with almost the same group the entire weekend. :) This is my last year being involved with the con. Con Chair for two years, and web slave for the past two, I've just burned myself out on Amber (though am not letting go totally) and really just didn't want to be involved anymore. Hopefully a year break will revitalize me enough that I will attend next year. I mean, I had fun this year, right? Even if I didn't really play in any "traditional" Amber games.

And I was quite pleased that the Apology Pigs managed to make their way from the Friday night slot into many other game slots. Lou played an excellent Zim, and I had fun as Dib. Also played in Jack's Amberclaw, which used dice (Horrors!!), and was a good first try. I think it could be better with a bit more work (but who was expecting Caine to hijack the plot?), but it appears Jack is trying for something else next year, which could also be a lot of fun.

Belated Food Stuffs Friday Five

1. What drinking water do you prefer -- tap, bottle, purifier, etc.?

Bottle. It's the convenience. We have a purifier in the fridge and one on the tap. But I also am a big fan of room temperature water, so there you go.

2. What are your favorite flavor of chips?

Cape Cod Sea Salt and Vinegar. If not that, then plain Lays or Ruffles. MMmmm....chips...

3. Of all the things you can cook, what dish do you like the most?

I'm more of a dessert person than a meal person. I really like my spinach & artichoke dip though, and so do others. At least, there's never anything left and there's not a lot of artichoke-spinachy smell coming from the trash afterwards, so I assume they like it...

4. How do you have your eggs?

Scrambled, or over medium. I used to do over hard, but I now can appreciate putting some of the yolk on toast. Never over easy or sunnyside up. I like my white firm, thank you.

I am also a fan of quiche as long as it's not "egg pie with stuff on top," which is unfortunately how Persy's is making their quiche now.

And this, of course, is only if Lou isn't making omelettes.

5. Who was the last person who cooked you a meal? How did it turn out?

Lou is the cook in our house, so it would have been him. Besides restaurants, of course. And it turned out fine, as all of his meals do.

Wow. Been a while

Woke up early today, no particular reason, alas. Decided that, since Jack is sleeping on the futon in the living room, I'd use my desktop in the computer room instead of my laptop. It's time to run some Windows updates anyway, I thought, so why not?

I run the Windows updates in the background, and note that on my toolbar, I have a bookmark for my blog and entry into my blog. Cool. I haven't done my Weight Watchers posts for the past two days, I'll do that while I wait. So I click on the blogentry bookmark, and this is what I got.

Wow. I guess I haven't used this computer in a while, hmm? Though it's not that difficult to guess why.

Blogroll additions

I added The Spice Must Flow to the blogroll a bit ago, and didn't have time to announce it. So now I am. Jenn is a good friend and a great cook, and I look forward to more recipes!

And the latest addition is The Non-Euclidian Staircase. Jack's finally got his own blog, yay!

Identity

I didn't know a lot about this movie going into it, and I was very glad that I didn't. To know a lot about this movie has the potential for spoiling the movie for the viewer, I think. So this review isn't so much of a review as a recommendation. Maybe in a few weeks or so I'll post a longer review on my Popblog.

That said, I really do recommend that you see this movie. It's clever, dark, dangerous, and highly entertaining. Identity is by far the best movie I've seen this year, and that includes seeing X2 (still the current obession, so much so that I watched Sugar and Spice today just to see James Marsden without the goggles) and Matrix Reloaded.

I definitely want to see it again, and want to drag Lou this time (went with Pat and Betsy). And Pat and I are working on making a game of this for the next TBR. That should tell you something!

But it's in California!!!

Dream Job.

Damn being an East Coaster. And a New Englanda to boot!

EDIT: There's another one, spotted by Anne.

Well, yes, I'm still busy, why do you ask?

I hate it when I don't have enough entries on the front page and the formatting gets all screwy. Makes me want to do a bunch of tests and memes to fill it all out.

So, I meant to post something Wednesday about my new co-worker, but I didn't have a chance. Then I was going to do something yesterday, and didn't have the time. And now today...same thing.

Night-time has been filled with games and time spent with the husband and chatting online for more games. I've never done a LJ RPG before...they are quite different from all other RPGs I've run into before. Much less GMage. I'm still getting used to having to run my own plots. It's not bad, just...different.

I'm helping Lisamarie with an install of MT tomorrow. Should really confirm that with her tonight. But Lou and I are going to try to catch a flick tomorrow some time, so we need to decide what and when.

Now, it's time for lunch.
