No, it's not all about me...

Carly Simon to auction off information about just who she was singing about in "You're So Vain" in charity auction.

Along with serving up peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and vodka on the rocks, CARLY will reveal to ONE of you WHO the song was written about!!?!!
Heard about this on the Today show this morning.

You know, if I had the money, I think I'd win the auction just to tell Carly I didn't want to know.

Yeah, I'm perverse that way.

GenCon 2003 Part I

I am going to post them in small installments, so you can read them more easily at your leisure. And not all at once, so don't look for more until tomorrow, unless I cave and decide to post them all tonight.

Today, you get Wednesday and Thursday.

Retaking the D&D Character quiz

This came from a different location than before, but only a slightly different result.

I Am A: Chaotic Good Elf Ranger Bard

Alignment:
Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to such groups.

Race:
Elves are the eldest of all races, although they are generally a bit smaller than humans. They are generally well-cultured, artistic, easy-going, and because of their long lives, unconcerned with day-to-day activities that other races frequently concern themselves with. Elves are, effectively, immortal, although they can be killed. After a thousand years or so, they simply pass on to the next plane of existance.

Primary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.

Secondary Class:
Bards are the entertainers. They sing, dance, and play instruments to make other people happy, and, frequently, make money. They also tend to dabble in magic a bit.

Deity:
Solonor Thelandria is the Chaotic Good elven god of archery and the hunt. He is also known as the Keen Eye, the Great Archer, and the Forest Hunter. His followers respect nature, and only hunt when needed, but are quick to defend the forest from intruders. Their favorite weapon is the bow, and they tend to be extremely talented with it. Solonor Thelandria's symbol is an arrow with green fletchings.

Way to go, Episcopalians

Episcopalians approve gay bishop

I would imagine this will be a very busy day for my friend The Rev. Jan Nunley, who is the Deputy Director of the Episcopal News Service. Yes, busy day indeed.

Unsatisfied by the ending of Pirates of the Caribbean?

If so, perhaps you should read a bit more on what got left out. Not of the ending, mind. But of earlier in the script.

And Norrington's first name is James.

EDIT 08/15/03: Since the link is dead, a copy is provided in the extended entry.

Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen...

A mastermind of maneuvering surrounding forces, you care little for the concerns of those in your way.

Palpatine is a character in the Star Wars universe. The Star Wars Databank has his profile.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Good quiz, lots of possible results. Be sure to look at the scale, though ballot-stuffing is always a possibility.

And no, Anne, I didn't cheat, why did you ask? *innocent look*

Keeping a good distance

Jack, let's make sure we don't get too close to the minkes on the whale watch tomorrow, okay?

Teeny tiny rust monster?

Iron-eating bug found to thrive in 121C heat

The newly discovered micro-organism does not yet have a scientific name but its finders call it "Strain 121". The researchers, Kazem Kashefi and Derek Lovley from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, found the tiny creature in a deep-sea volcanic vent on the bed of the Pacific Ocean, where temperatures reach 400C.

They put Strain 121 in a hot oven to find that it enjoyed the experience - colonies continued to double in size at 121C.

Come on, guys! Call it what it is. A rust monster!

Internet Outages during Blackout

Yes, lay the blame elsewhere

Texting blamed for summer movie flops

But those days are over, because the technology of hand-held text-message devices has drastically cut down the time it takes for movie-goers to tell their friends that a heavily promoted summer action movie is a waste of time and money.

They do admit that movies this summer are arguably as bad as movies 5 summers ago.

I wish there was a way to search by release date (not just year) on the IMdb. Because I think I could argue this point.

LotR to be re-released!

From Variety, which is a paid subscription website so I'm not going to link to it, comes this news:

New Line Cinema will re-release The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, with additional scenes and footage added, just two weeks before the worldwide December 17 release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

More info in the cut. Now I just need to find a place that is going to show them all on the 16th. A place with comfortable seats. Oh yes.

Dean Fundraiser at home of old boss

Dean gets old-fashioned fundraiser [free registration required]

So far, Dean has received contributions from 93,000 on-line supporters at an average of about $80 each. Last night's fundraiser at the home of Jennifer and Joesph Gould -- two top administators at St. George's -- had a minimum donation of $250 and drew about 175 for wine and canapes under a billowing white tent on a pleasant summer evening.
Gotta love the Projo. Misspelling the first name of my old boss. But it does make me wonder what position Jen has at the school. When I left, she wasn't working there. Ah, a quick check of the website reveals all. She's a gift coordinator.

By the way, though it's not mentioned in the article, Dean did attend St. George's, like most of his siblings. Not quite sure if he graduated like the others did, but I do know he went there.

You know, if they'd kept this (QT, low res) (QT, high res) scene in the movie, people wouldn't have been so confused as to why Jean left the X-Jet. More links to deleted clips (including WMV formats) can be found here.

Okay, this is really freaky. And if I were still a kid, I might be intrigued. Now...I'm just stunned.

But where do we put the olives?

Saturday night, with the cooler weather and all the ingredients purchased, I (with some able assistance from Lou), made Jenn's Chicken with Tomato and Feta, along with the Sesame Orzo with Charred Scallions.

All in all, it was an excellent meal (though I didn't read it clearly and had only thawed two chicken breasts, but we made the sauce as is (save I had already put in half of the oregano called for, but it was still tasty), and we are planning on using the leftover sauce on some pasta later this week. The orzo, while tasty, took too many pans to prepare for such a small dish, so I will not likely be making that particular recipe again. Plus, Lou is not keen on sesame seeds.

My only query was, well after the meal was eaten and put away, was Where did the olives go? Jenn's recipe calls for olives in the ingredient list, but nowhere in the prep.

A bit of Googling turned up this version, which uses rosemary instead of oregano, and has the olives added in with the cheese, at the end.

So next time (and there WILL be a next time for this), we will be better prepared to use those olives we bought.

You belong in the Cat Who Walks Through Walls. You
are creative and cunning. Your works often
feel empty to you, though others love them.
You suspect that the universe and everyone in
it are just characters in someone else's story.
