Know when to hold'em

I have become a poker fan. (I've actually become a Howard Lederer fangirl too) I still am cheesed at myself for missing out on the Texas Hold'em game I saw running at the Sahara when we were in Vegas (that had a full table alas, and I was so busy losing my money at Blackjack when we went back that I forgot to check for poker games).

It all started with the Celebrity Poker Showdown on Bravo, which then followed with a marathon of the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel during Christmas break. That's when I saw Howard Lederer win at Foxwoods (if I'm remembering correctly), an Indian gaming casino located about an hour's drive from me.

I'm planning on watching the last half of the WPT on Wednesdays this year. Not watching the first half because Angel is on, at least for this season, at 9:00 p.m.

But what I really want to do is play. Penny poker, with some friends. We've got a lot of pennies in a container at home, we could make it work.

If I could find a night to do it. And people who wanted to play Texas Hold'em.

Jesus: Wait a second. [puts down cross]
Off Camera: What is it?
Jesus: [wipes right eye] There’s something in my eye.
Simon: Oh my God, it’s a mote.
Off Camera: [laughter]

I'm sure they'll never make it onto the DVD, but I thought them very funny, and that's just the text transcript.

Farscape on Acid

Farscape Mini Series News

We once again have assumed the identity of the Henson Creature shop in Sydney and are in the final throes of the Farscape Mini Series, only a couple of weeks to go till completion. We have produced 22 episodes worth of work in 4 mini-movies, so get ready for Farscape on Acid! It's been an experience we will never forget.

I can't wait!

But what about women who LIKE to look under the hood?

Volvo has a new concept car, designed by women for women.

While I love the concept of a split headrest for women who wear ponytails, the inaccessible engine compartment leaves women like me - trained by my father on how to change the oil on my car, and able to get my old Plymouth Duster going when the men around me just stood and stared dumbly - scratching their heads.

I also don't think I'd change the seat pads to match my outfit (*teehee* I'm a girl!!), though putting wool ones on in the winter would be helpful.

"Let us reason together"

Word.

Where is the Christian tolerance in those right-wing Christian leaders who would impose their religious beliefs on the entire diverse population of the United States, even to the extent of a Constitutional amendment curtailing our rights of religious freedom?

Well said, Mr. Cronkite.

NEVER go drink-for-drink with Gary Gygax...

Ask the DM.

Very funny stuff. Don't forget to check out the archives, links are at the bottom of the page.

Ecto

No, not that ecto, but the new version of what used to be Kung-Log.

I wondered today why I hadn't gotten any update notices for Kung-Log, and went looking and found this. Still not sure if I'll end up using it (and paying for it) or going back to Kung-Log. If I had a Mac OS X laptop at home, I'd be more likely to consider paying.

Will have to try it for a bit, I think, and then decide. Meanwhile, I should take Kung-Log out of the Trash in my Dock...

New version

Just did the upgrade to MT 2.661, having held off longer than necessary, but also enough to make sure that it was working right with MT-Blacklist. All seems to be well, yay!

And MT seems to be the latest thing in the blogging circles. Go Mena and Ben!

Closing comments

I've decided that I want to close the comments of my Weight Watchers Blog. We're not using it anymore, and I don't want to get rid of it yet.

I just want to stop getting comments, sometimes angry ones, from people who think that we owe them an answer.

But I can't find an easy way to close comments without going to each post and editing it. There are a LOT of posts on that blog. Power Editing mode doesn't have that option.

Umm...help?

The Man behind the Sky Captain

The New York Times Magazine [free registration required] has an interesting article on the man behind Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and how the film came to be.

June 25th is the release date. It seems so far away...

Tell me, please

Someone, please tell me that this isn't true. Please.

A bill. To allow Congress to reverse the judgments of the United States Supreme Court.

I have no words.

New Domains possible

The BBC is reporting that new TLDs have been submitted to ICANN.

.cat?

.cat?

How long before people start registering "catname.cat"? I mean, I'd love to have athena.cat and artemis.cat, even if I never do anything with them.

I must admit, I still think a .xxx TLD is a good idea. I have read through the recent Slashdot discussion on it (well, some of the discussion). I know what is considered "adult" or "pr0n" in some places don't match other places, and I do also believe it's up to the parents to monitor their kids.

I guess I just want all my pr0n in one place.

Portable & NYC

I'm off to NYC for a training at Apple next week.

I'll be bringing an iBook from work, since my laptop is dying. Plus, it's a Windows machine. I must keep it safe from the Macheads.

As my laptop is dying, I am in the market for a new one. But what to choose? I love my Toshiba. But I love my G5 at work, and the unix underpinnings of OS X.

I've been thinking about another Toshiba, or maybe a little Sony Vaio (but they are much more expensive, the smaller you get). Or maybe a 12" PB, like Lou's, or maybe even a 12" G4 iBook. (no, I don't want the 15" PB, I like something small and easily portable. Which rules the 17" PB RIGHT OUT.)

The Satellite A45 series looks nice, though the screen is still pretty large. The Portété is nice, but I don't like how the screen connects on the M100, and the R-100 is very expensive.

Then there are the itty bitty Sony Vaios. Expensive, but tiny, and the in-stock one has pretty much all I would want.

Oh, and as an FYI, i.Link or Firewire is a /must/ with either laptop (why those brands/models and not other, in particular).

Adult Swim

Now I'm certain I should be taping InuYasha on Adult Swim.

At least for the bumps. Because according to what I heard, this was on a recent bump:

"Basically the Tetsiga transforms from a Katana to a Falchion,
that means that its damage increases from 1d10 to 2d8
and its threat range goes to 18-20
if you know what that means
you have a problem"

I've been taping Witch Hunter Robin (it's FINALLY gotten good, but I've missed so many episodes for a variety of reasons, I'm hoping they rerun it after it's done this run), and gotten Lou hooked on Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and Sealab: 2021.

And then there is the fact that InuYasha is a half-demon, and the NPC in Lou's ATD game is a half-demon named Yasha. *chuckles*

By the way, the shark would win.

And so would the astronauts.

Geek Cred!

I think I need a "geek" category...

All about the geeking today when I opened email today and found two messages from /., telling me my comment was moderated as interesting by a few people!

Lou just didn't get it.

And my laptop has been consigned to CompUSA (the one in North Attleboro, I won't go back to the one in Warwick for all the tea in China...and I adore tea). They say they'll give me an estimate before they start work. Here's hoping it won't be too much. 3-7 days before they tell me, I think.

So I'm using a 12" iBook borrowed from work, for use also while I'm in NYC next week. I really like the size of this, but the screen, I'm finding, is maybe just a tad bit too small for me and daily use.

I'm also giving Safari a week to convince me to switch from Camino. I don't think I will switch (and I do have Camino on the laptop), but we'll give it a go.

Bob Edwards pushed out

NPR Stations Had Pushed for Change [NYT, free registration required] details a push for removing Bob Edwards as host of Morning Edition, a position he's held since it started 25 years ago this November, that began at the local NPR station level.

I listen to NPR every morning when I drive in by myself (which, I admit, isn't very often anymore), but I also listen to it once I get to work, as our local station keeps it going until 9:00, at which point they move to BBC Newshour.

NPR hopefully will have learned a valuable lesson from all the brouhaha they're going to be getting over this.
