First off, let me start with SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Second, let me say we got swag! Keychains! Anne's Tim got two due to his sneakiness of going out to get popcorn and an icee and when coming back in was offered another one!
Thirdly, we got Sean Maher and Morena Baccarin!!! And if Lou didn't have to work today, I SO would have stayed in the 500 person line and gotten autographs.
Sean and Morena looked quite overwhelmed by the audience response. I knew we were going to have SOMEONE there based on the camera crew that we had, and the way that 10 minutes before the start of the movie, moved to one side and kept focusing on the one exit door at the front. I kept a watchful eye on them and the door.
We had a big speech about no cameras, and the guy from Universal messed up and said privacy instead of piracy and the crowd laughed. He took it all in stride, and also warned about using night vision technology. Of course, geeks that we are, everyone in the audience was SWEET! *laugh*
Joss began the movie with a segment that MUST be on the DVD. He explained about how this never gets done with cancelled shows (except for, you know, Star Trek, as Anne mentioned, except that Firefly didn't even get a full season), and that if we loved it, recruit more people, and if we didn't, then it was a time for silent contemplation.
There's not really anything spoilery below, but for those whom comments about non-spoilery things IS a spoiler, I will cut it for you.
Fourthly, I can't imagine that there was anyone there who walked out of that theater two hours later (or longer if you stayed for autographs) and did NOT enjoy the film.
I will give you no spoilers. Look elsewhere. There are some HUGE things that happen in this movie. All I will say is that while our standard mantra - Trust in Joss, Joss will provide - rings especially true, this movie is NOT without your standard Joss twists and thrusts. Never relax. Never let your guard down, or he'll smack you with it and leave you reeling.
This was obviously still a rough cut. There are a lot of things that needed to be cleaned up, effects still yet to finalize, maybe a few more tweaks and cuts and edits, but it's very nearly perfect. I think, unlike some other folk, that this can actually stand alone pretty well. If you're a sci-fi fan that some how didn't get to see Firefly when it was on TV and resisted the DVDs, you wouldn't be completely lost. Many of the nuances might be lost on you, but overall you'll still "get" everything. And hopefully it will make you want to watch the DVDs.
If you are a fan of the series, then it may seem like some of the relationships present in the show have regressed in the six months between the close of the series and the start of the movie (I'm hoping that the three comic book miniseries will help explain some of it), like Lou did. I think I managed to explain how things could have regressed in a logical fashion, but it's never *stated* that my beliefs are fact, just a guess on my part. So you may be scratching your head, like he was, over some of the relationships and how they're portrayed. I also think it's possible that some things were done because of it being a *movie* designed to draw in non-fans as well. Can't have everything being perfectly happy and ship-shape when we begin, now can we? Where is the conflict?
Fifthly, I have much, much pity for every Browncoat who was unable to go to a screening. You guys will have to wait now until September 30th to see the wonders that we saw last night. It was amazing, mind-blowing, and worth the ticket price, the price of parking in Boston, the dinner at P.F. Chang's, the late night ride home when I was crashing from the Coke (not Diet mind, but regular Coke, which I rarely ever drink), and the tiredness I'm feeling this morning. Yes, I know, I'm home because I took a vacation day instead of sticking it out like Anne and going to work.
Sixthly, OMG SQUEEE!!!!!

Well, reading some of the forums, there seem to be plenty of people who walked away unhappy, though I feel like most of them are of the "OMG I LOVE CHARACTER X AND I WANT CHILDREN WITH THEM AND NOW THIS BIG PLOT TWIST HAS DESTROYED ALL THE JOY I HAVE WITH THIS SHOW OMGWTFBBQ!" type, which I find difficult to take seriously.
I thought it was splendid.
Though I wouldn't need a faboo movie to get me to eat dinner at PF Chang's ...

Considering that, at one point, I was going to be going down for JUST the dinner at PF Changs (which I hadn't been to before), I must admit I wouldn't've been that upset (it was very good) if that had been it. Gotta try that again when I don't want to stuff myself and fall asleep soon (which I really, really didn't want to do).
But was MUCH happier to have movie tickets as well. I've loaned my DVDs out to a co-worker today, to start doing my Browncoat part.
